Just to close the thread... I confirmed that Andrew's hot-fix patch [1]
solves this problem for me also.
(I would have liked for you to CC the i2c list when you reported the fix
worked... it would have saved me the trouble of setting up to reproduce
it and debug it and finally conclude it couldn't be any of the i2c patches
[which it wasn't] and *then* I looked at the -mm mailing list. Argh.)
