[i2c] Newbie to I2C subsystem..Need Help

Hi,
 
I want to use the 'linux/drivers/i2c/chips/eeprom' driver.
I loaded the the 'eeprom.ko', but I think I am missing the steps to load the adapter.

$> tree /sys/class/i2c-adapter/
/sys/class/i2c-adapter/
 0 directories, 0 files

Could you tell me how to locate a particular adapter driver and steps to load it (if it is not using 'insmod') ?
