[i2c] pcf8574 reading

Hi

i have parallel port connected i2c-hardward adabter and pcf8574 controlled
relay board to manage powers to pc:s

is there workking way to read pcf8574 values from chip
and
is it possible to say pcf8574 module to not write anything  to port at
initialisation

i try to read values with i2cdump (with out pcf8574 module)  and from /proc
files with pcf8574 module but no success


Fedora core 5 /kernel  2.6.20 / lm_sensors 2.6.2
